I sketch mine on paper first. The high elf I did, I sketched a copy from a book I have, the picture was thumbnail size lol. It turned out good though, I got her pretty much right 
I try to sketch on paper first.... You don't want to see my attempts. *laughs*
I think it's because my paper ends up sideways, so it looks good when i'm drawing, and then everything is like... lopsided when i'm done. lol.
