Google for DAZ and download DAZ Studio. Then Google for Apollo Maximus and get the best free Male Character model around... Fiddle around with that a bit and you can learn to make your own...
It's what Jet and I do... Jet introduced me to DAZ and I just love it!
Be sure to check out the Tutorials for DAZ.

I have spent a bit on it as well but I do take advantage of some of the free items that are available.
Also being a member of the DAZ Platinum club helps lower the cost of items a bit as well.
The programs I use are:
DAZ Studio from [url]http://www.daz3d.com/
The Gimp from http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net
Blender from http://www.blender.org/
The site I use most for free content is
http://www.renderocity.com
Be sure to read the descriptions before you buy or download so you will know whether you can use it or not. Some items are made for certain other items that need to be purchased first. It will take a while to get used to the software and the models. Go through the tutorials that come with DAZ. Don't worry about Blender for now. Do get The Gimp unless you have a bunch of bucks for Photoshop. (The Gimp is now able to use Photoshop brushes with no conversion.. I'll write up a quick tutorial on how to get that going later.)

Well you and I are pretty unique in that respect...
I did do the first tutorial but added my own touches to it before the end of it. Never read any further instructions from DAZ on it though other than to find out how to make Poser Props from my own creations and how to import props made in Blender. But then, those are areas you haven't explored yet...
Whenever you decide to get your feet wet, let me know.
